First Linux Class – What are my Options?

I'm taking my first C++ class, this is what my professor posted about the first programming project:

"You need Linux. Your code must run on the department Linux machines. If you have a separate Linux installation that you want to use, ssh over to the department machines to make sure nothing breaks or just go visit them"

I have a Windows desktop & laptop.

What's my best option for working with the hardware that I have? Should I download a SSH client? Should I dual boot Ubuntu? I don't really know what would be the most convenient working between a laptop & desktop environment.
