How do messaging apps receive messages?

Does the app constantly check with the server if the are new messages or does the app listen for new messages sent by the server?

There are probably apps that do it one way and other that do it the other way. But which way is the most efficient? And if both ways I wrote above are not commonly used. How do they do it?
