Thinking of trying to change to software engineer

I am a longtime network engineer. I have always considered moving to the software side of the world but lately the thoughts are getting more serious. After 15 years, I am getting a little sick of the overnights and on-call getting in the way of life at times. I understand long hours but in my inexperienced understanding, the day is over when you leave. I won't get called back into work while mowing the lawn or having Mother's Day dinner with my wife. I realize that I will need to retrain to make the jump but I don't want spend time training only for it to be a grass is greener on the other side of the fence situation.
