[x-post] Managing choices in large development orgs

I am inheriting 15k+ strong, globally spread development organization in a software development company.

Historically, company amassed cocktail of technology stacks, programming models for different cloud applications.

Home grown was rather standardised, till the acquisitions came one by one.

Right now, the immediate challenge is to reign in the technology chaos, but also offer the freedom ** to different development teams. (the balance)

** e.g. freedom of Iaas – or an abstraction (e.g. k8s), or build on opiniated PaaS.

I know there is no clear answer to these kind of questions, but I want to hear from those who have tried – what worked, what failed.
