How do you successfully get a community based site going?

My question is how did sites like reddit, YouTube, twitter, Instagram, etc. get the first wave of people to use their site? Before the first wave of people there wouldn't of been any user posted content on those site to begin with. How can you launch a community based site and get people to post when there is no community yet?
