How to explain concurrent users accessing APIS?

I'm in a team that is transforming a legacy desktop application to an online solution. There are some people from the legacy team that are new to this technology stack. We're trying to come up with a scaling strategy and I'm finding it difficult to explain to them the difference between users accessing the system and concurrent access to APIs.

Does anybody have suggestions for an analogy I can use?
