Hi guys,
I want to start a career in technical writing/documentation and would like to know what’s the best path to follow, apart from going back to college and taking an engineering major?
I have a BA and Master’s in English Lit and have over ten years of experience in the teaching, translation, localization, proofreading/editing and copywriting as well as in non-technical documentation fields, but I don’t have a tech background. However, I do know very basic info regarding building sites. (Not that that matters, but it could be a nice plus.)
I work at an IT company and have seen how much money the IT side makes in comparison to the back office side, which is where I am at right now.
I also have background in graphic design so I wanted to learn a little of Front-End in the future, but Technical Writing seems to better fit my profile.
Are there any courses online for this? Hopefully, they would go from the basics to the most complex parts of the job.
I’m quite interested in API documentation roles and have seen that you don’t have to code to work as a TW, but you must be knowledgeable when comes to tech specs and vocabulary and this is where I need help. I have the organization and language skills, but missing the tech part.
I understand this isn’t something you learn from one day to the next one, but I do want to invest time, effort, and money, if needed, to make it happen.
Any idea will help. Thanks in advance.
