How to start a side project?

Hi all,

I'm currently a software engineer by profession and I'm interested in helping a friend develop a windows app for his business. I'm looking for resources or advice on where to start. Specifically, how to share development/progress of the app with 1 other developer, do we need a VM to share work? How to go about getting the app in production?

Any advice would be appreciated!
