Is it worth it to use jsonapi in 2019? does it have more good as some claims or it’s just an overkill that you won’t need it even if with big scale?

Short story, I got an existing Django API to work on, they were using ember in frontend so they decided to use JSON-API back then for some reason or whatever I really don't know.

Now I'm working on this backend and got some complaints from mobile dev as API response is a bit complicated and there are much unnecessary data, also this issue arises in some parts with frontend dev.

So, from your point of view or experience, is using JSON-API worth it ? does it have big benefits that I will really need in the future so we coup with it now and be happy later? or it's really an overkill that no one needs at the end of 2019 and using plain JSON is enough and efficient?
