How are Native Apps are smoother than Hybrid/Web apps

I’m not a Mobile Apps developer but I’m always curious what the difference is between a clunky Mobile app and a Smooth responsive Mobile App. I believe the main difference is the mobile app being built as a Native app vs a Hybrid. I’m wondering what about this makes it different? For example on Native Apps, tapping buttons, swiping, etc feels smooth and fast! On the other hand, some apps feel sluggish and slow. When you click and swipe, things feel delayed and laggy like if you were using a Browser instead of an App. Is there something specific, like certain APIs that the phone is using, that causes this?
