How much do you invest in documentation?

I've been in organisations that celebrated good documentation – textual representations for hld/old and code comments and logs to read through. But I've also come across the 'code acts as documentation' philosophy. Where do you draw the line in your team to document some detail against keep it in the code for different stakeholders to consume?
