Proprietary and/or Dead languages

Is it common to be asked to develop in a dead or custom language? I’m not gonna say what language I’m dealing with here or from where, but I’ll say it is not an existing category on StackOverflow, or on Github, so the learning resources outside of management are basically non-existent. Some languages are comparable, but yeah, I just continue to be confused by the decision.
