Are open source software communities a self organizing structure?

For successful open source software that get a lot of developers to help develop it. Would you say that the community that grows up around it is an example of an emergent self organizing structure like a flock or bids or an ant colony?

By self organizing I mean complex group patterns that emerge from simple individual behavior.
