Any advice on recording programming projects?

Hi all, if been thinking about documenting the development process of a few projects, and have attempted to record and edit a segment of screen recorded footage, however something just seems off. I can't find a good workflow for productively developing swell as recording and describing what I'm doing. Does anyone have any experience with this? any advice would be appreciated!
