The future of technical specifications?

Hello fellow developers!

To my knowledge, a proper tool/framework to write, maintain and nurture technical specifications is missing in software project management.

If you have any experience writing specs, what tool/framework/process do you use?

My opinion so far on why not use Notion/Excel/Word and any template?

  • Because specs are written for very different user personas: developers, QA engineers, project managers, end clients. In my mind, all those personas should have different views of the same specifications (more or less technical, more or less detailed). I didn't find a sustainable way to maintain different versions for each different persona in Notion/Excel/Word.
  • Because specs are by nature very linked to the code, and should be as close as possible of the code. If not, they are not well deprecated/maintained when new features arise.
