What is open-source exactly and why is it good put simply?

I see a lot of companies advertising that there product is open-source. I think I get what it means as in anyone can get the code and make changes to it?

But I’m not getting the full picture of why this is good and why it is beneficial that companies like to advertise it a lot if someone can explain simply?
