Do you really care about the quality of code that gets committed?

I'm of the opinion that if it works, then we don't need to make it look perfect, but some senior Devs are incredibly anal about the code. What makes me feel this way is that I've worked on many crappy code bases, so I see it as an inevitability that it ends up going that way.
