Is becoming a software developer still feasible/in high demand?

I'm looking at my options and considering becoming a developer after realizing my initial line of work (Veterinary) wouldn't sustain me financially.. I also would like to work remotely occasionally. I'm just worried it won't be feasible after i'm done educating myself, after however long that takes.
