Do I need to patent/license my software idea?

My dad built a software that he wants to introduce in ATM/Gas Station Machines and he wants to start looking for investors and people who might be interested in it. He mentioned that in order to start selling the idea he needs to get a patent which would mean $10K contracts and legal stuff.

Is this true? I want to help him get the idea out but this sounds really expensive and really high risk.

What do you guys recommend?
