Can you please explain the difference between IPAAS and API

Hello all, I am trying to understand the difference between IPAAS and API. My general understanding is that they are two different things that sits between different applications. I cannot understand the difference between them, they seem to be the same thing to me. I am not a programmer. Can you explain to me what the two are in a layman's term?
