How do I explain to a non-tech exec that Software is hard to build?.

So I'm currently a technical co-founder of a pre-seed startup. My other cofounders and investors are from a finance background and are new to software investing in general.

While they're completely fine with my progress so far, and the product is bringing in at least enough revenue to cover the cost base, one problem I'm facing is that of unreasonable expectations.

Some examples:

  • They'll come up with a crazy idea of an entirely new product; thinking that it's a months work.
  • They'll never recognize the team & my efforts in building a product from scratch, making it production-ready, and then onboarding and delivering to clients. To them, this is a "given" since they put in money.
  • They'll ask why we aren't close to company XYZ (who was been in the space for 8 years)
  • They're generally very nitpicky on the roadmaps I present them.
  • Talk about "diversifying" the product-line thinking that this team of 8 people can make and run 5 products concurrently.

Now from my POV, I've ideated on product, assembled a team, built an MVP, sold the product to a few clients, and know what I have to do to stay competitive. All in less than a year. I feel very disappointed when this effort is not recognized for what it is; but I don't blame them either. They don't understand the complexities of it.

Is there any way (an article perhaps) on this that I can make them read? Or a guidebook of TODOs to get them to understand that building software is not easy. It's turning kind of toxic for myself and the team.
