How can a software developer contribute to society?

How can we, as Software developers, make this living for all of us more worthwhile?

IT has more and more intruded in our lives. It has solved many problems, it has brought society closer than ever, it has made life more comfortable in many aspects but at the same time it also has created problems.

Despite that there are still a lot of problems out there and most of them cannot be solved by software development.

But what problems can be solved by developers? Where are programmers needed? Where is better software needed? Especially, where most don't want to work because of lack of financial incentives.

This is a very broad question and it can be answered in many ways and I think I am just looking for inspiration where we could put our work into, even if it is just as a hobby, part time, etc.
