A lot of people seem to prefer complexity over simplicity

I've been partaking in a lot of opinionated code reviews of late and it's surprising to me that no matter what team or organization you go to, people will still bend over backwards to complicate simple logic/architecture. A lot of times, I think they want to show that "I know this trick or niche library" more than they want to actually help you improve your code, and it can be frustrating sometimes. was I naive to think this was a rookie thing to do or do you guys experience it more often than not?
