Msix vs msi or “normal” installer

Hello. I'm looking to distribute a package and the first option I found was an msix package. This installs a "WindowsApp" rather than a "regular Windows program" like an exe or msi installer that puts everything in the Program Files. I don't use any Windows "Apps" that I know of and have always just used regular programs, as I call them.

Is msix the future or is this some gimmick? I just want to make sure I'm not painting myself in a corner by going with msix since it's my first option. I am confused about the difference in a "regular program like every program I've ever installed on my computer" vs whatever a "Windows App" is.
