How do you develop an opinion without prior experience?

Example: Let’s say you were asked to change your product from a simple input/output app to supporting event sourcing architecture. As a senior dev, how do you start and know enough to get discussions started and develop a plan, architect, and start coding the new product while guiding junior devs?
