Hello,
We are looking to provide ecommerce functionality to our clients. We are considering whether to use an open source headless platform like Magento or build it ourselves.
I recommended using an open source platform (because why reinvent the wheel when its already done) but there are some tradeoffs:
- Our current backend is multi-tenant and it is desired to have an ecommerce solution that supports multi-tenancy. None of the open source platforms do that, thus requiring separate instances of their APIs running for each client.
- We currently use MSSQL database engine and there are no true open source ecommerce platforms using MSSQL. This would require us to run another database engine on the server (or run our ecommerce services on a different server entirely), requiring more resources.
My manager also has concerns regarding scalability of such a solution as the number of clients requiring ecommerce on their apps increases.
I still think it is worth it to just use an off-the-shelf solution even though it might use some additional resources but our IT manager is opposed to it.
I am looking for opinions on which way would be better ?
Thanks.
