How Does Bulk Email Software Work?

Outside of the customisation options and templates for marketing clients. I’m wondering how web services like mail chimp or Klaviyo work to be able to send emails in massive volumes? Do they make use of Google or Microsoft email services e.g. workspace? If so, how does that work?

Thinking about starting something similar but would love some direction.
