DIY web and SQL hosting

I am trying to build an android app and use my own hosted web and SQL server. I need to be able to access the SQL server/database while not on my home network.

So far, I haven't been able to find any resources to help me get it up and running.

Does anyone know of any walkthroughs or set up guides to do this?

I'm a bit out of my element when it comes to configuring and setting it up.
