Distributed vs. Centralized Docs: Any ideas for best of both world?

I kinda assume this is a relatively common problem, curious if anyone has tools/ideas.

We have a very distributed system, many microservices, lambdas, etc., all in different repos. We are always torn on docs living with the services/repos, or with a centralized place for all. For example, we try to put all links for observability info in each service's readme (links to logs, dashboards, distributed tracing, etc.).

Inevitably somebody asks if we can have all these links for each service in 1 place. I never want 2 sources of truth since inevitably one or both never get maintained.

Interested on different ideas!
