Does having more development environments save the business money?

Currently, my Dev team has one environment to work with and we share it with one other team. Many problems often arise because two independent, but related, Dev teams are committing changes to the same Dev and QA environments.

Is it worth it to the business to introduce more environments, or is it only a convenience for Dev teams? Are there any studies done on this? Thanks for any feedback.
