We should invest in more efficient software

If i may ask, Do you have an example of software which is so efficient in its resources consumption, but has good performance, i always try to find such software just out of interest, i believe more resources should be dumped into software development to make better use of the hardware we have, that is why i use Linux and support not because of security or anything like that but because it is light weight and allows you to do so much with very little hardware.
