What is a good resource to begin learning how to build a custom accounting software?

I am currently a CFO with a fair bit of background in IT, but none I'm software development. There are hardly any accounting softwares for my industry that can do exactly what I need.

I'd like to get a general idea of what exactly it would take to build one in house and potentially sell it to similar companies if everything works well.
