Messaging app

Hello developers,

Before anything I'm not the best or most experienced coder.

I had this cool idea of creating a private messaging app for me and my close friends, The server will be an old computer in my basement that i will setup. I want to make a simple CLI app for now. The problem is, I'm having trouble starting the project. I don't really know what language to write it in (the server side part). I was thinking of Rust but i don't know. What should i research before hopping into this project? What would you recommend?
