TLDR at bottom
I am currently interning at a very small independent game company. We are working on our first game. Most of the groundwork has been laid and we are nearly ready to launch a pre-alpha version of the game.
My problem is, I feel like there is WAY too much being expected of me, and I feel like this experience has been nothing but stressful and defeating.
for context, there is one "senior level" developer writing just about everything, he is also the guy expected to train me. Above him is like….. the Senior+ level developer? I am not sure what I would call him, but basically he is the guy who really crafted a lot of the initial codebase and has kind of handed the reigns off to the guy training me.
without going into too much detail, my employer seemed very very understanding of my non existent skill level. I was told that I would be brought in and essentially paid to learn how to use C# and Unity to create a videogame. I have some programming experience/knowledge but most of it is from tutorials and YouTube videos. My employer was excited to open this internship opportunity for me, but it turns out they were woefully unprepared for what needs to be done.
almost immediately after I was assigned my first task, I was basically scolded for not "googling" enough and asking too many questions. I am supposed to work independently and complete tasks solo within 2 months. Very little teaching or help is given. Essentially, if I ask for help all I get back is vague directions. I never really get an answer because I think they just want me to figure this stuff out on my own?
I cant tell if this is just how internships go or if my employer is being unreasonable. Many things have been revealed to be EXPECTATIONS but originally seemed to be casual suggestions and off the cuff remarks. I get very little help, and the help that I do receive is super cryptic and difficult to understand. Sometimes I feel like the person "training" me just doesn't know how to explain things well? but he is also very busy and probably annoyed with having the help me… even though the whole point of this was clearly understood by everyone.
I feel like I've been thrown into a lake with cement shoes and expected to swim without help.
TLDR: I was hired by an employer that knew I knew nothing about c#. I was told to ask questions, but then got/get scolded for asking questions. I was told that teaching/training would be available but employer is vague, standoffish and unapproachable.
