So, this is related to crochet, 3D models, and some software development. While some parts of that might sound scary to some, others not so much, I had come up with this idea for a software/website a few months before Uni. However, I wanted to gauge part of the community that uses tech(Reddit) if this is interesting, helpful, or too complex(for me or for you).
For context I’m studying Technical Animation, 1st year in the UK, looking to do my masters. Had gotten into crochet over the summer and has really benefited my anxiety. I enjoy working with my hands and want to share my thoughts. None of this is actively being worked on since I wanted to get thoughts on it. Welcomed to any comments, critiques, or thoughts!
Pitch:
A website where you can import a 3D model, downloaded or self created, and it creates a rough pattern for you to follow, easing the time spent on creating a pattern and being able to see your final result.
Little more detail:
You as the user would import a .obj file, a process runs using chains or a magic ring to star, calculates how much you would need to increase/decrease and where to get the shape. What is left is the tweaking for more advanced crocheters and actually making the project.
Potential problems:
-doing different types of stitches such as bobble -size of .obj file too big or too much detail to get(low poly) -attempting to do it in one piece and not in several (legs, arms, head, body) -color decisions to switch could be off/ how it decides -actual physical size of made object affects how much detain can be put in -not having experience with importing/ downloading files -too niche to ask for tech skills and crochet skills -DK vs Chunky vs Fine vs…. Different types of yarn could be used along with different size hooks and tension all Palau into sizes
Fixes(for some issues)/ Addition:
-have a resource page to learn how to crochet, yarn over vs yarn under, reading patterns, how to use the site, etc… tutorial videos and images. -do the reverse, have a pattern typed into a pre formatted way and output a general shape for the parts *maybe have a “sew” mechanism to attach parts and move them slightly around in viewer -could get more young people into crochet via tech and older people into tech however asking for switching between traditional and digital media may be asking for a lot -paint in viewport the color changes and have that break up the stitches in row to have highlight/text color changes * color blind friendly -community page for requested additions -contacts for issues -query page for all Q and A’s available to user -history of crochet page -let others test! It’s why (closed/open) Beta/Alpha testing is a thing before being released
