How did you develop APIs pre-Postman?

I have been developing software for about 8 years now. During this time I have pretty much only used Postman to test my web APIs. cURL only once or twice. Postman or GUI-type app seems pretty essential to developing good APIs. So my question is to you: how did you develop APIs before you used Postman or a competitor? Or is there some predecessor to Postman I do not know of? Were people mostly testing in CLI? Shell scripts? Especially requesting people who developed server-side pre-2012ish. Thanks in advance!
