Looking to get a laptop. How does the Apple M series fare and compare to Windows options?

How do the Apple's M series laptops fare in programming?

I will mostly be using it for web and app development. Will occasionally need to do machine learning, AI, compiling kernels etc too.

How does it compare to Windows based options or x86 arch processors?
