Looking for pointers for a social service organisation’s software. (Toy rental)

Hey, I am currently in paternity leave, I am a video game developer. I go to a nice organisation that provides a play area for child and rent toys, while organising all kind of activities for children. It is a non-profit.

Currently, when I rent a toy, they have to look at the 10 digits number taped onto the toy, and type them all to rent me the toy. I was thinking about making a software where they could simply scan a barcode on the toys, or simply scan the already created numbers. It would be linked to user accounts, so we can scan the object on return to mark it as returned too.

They already have a software but I sometime dream about making their process more efficient. I'd do it pro-bono, but being a video game developer, i don't have much experiences with these type of software.

Anyone has any pointers for this? How hard/easy would this be ? Is there some tools that already exists to speed up the process? Would it be possible to link it to their website to have a live inventory for users?
