Configuration management, and why it sucks and what are the options

Hey /r/softwaredevelopment

I've been a software engineer for about 10 years now, I've worked on my own projects, startups, in fintech and in other industries and I find the one thing all these companies have in common is that configuration management always sucks.

Whether there are security breaches, or somebody changed a configuration that brought down the whole stack, it seems that it's something nobody gets right. I was wondering what experiences you guys and girls have, and what kind of tools you use to keep track of your configurations in a secure yet easy to use manner.

Thank you 🙂

p.s.

I wrote about the state of the industry at length in a medium post found here: https://medium.com/@mlevkovsky/configuration-management-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-16a01120763b

if anybody is interested 🙂
