Jira Help Needed: How do I use it properly (Best Practices)

I have used Jira for about a year at university as part of a team project, a Scrum was used to carry this out where next year I will be doing a KanBan. My problem is should you be using Jira? As I feel like we were just making it up as we went.

Asking my lectures about how to properly use and write up requirements (e.g. how a requirement criteria and proof of achievement should be written/presented) in a professional environment they do not seem to give me anything of use. As they seem to have never used in before, where it is quite possible it was their first time using the environment.

If anyone uses Jira and is willing to offer any tip, examples or best practices as I am next year marked on how to use it but they don't seem to know how to use it themselves. (Screenshots examples would be very helpful, but anything is appreciated)
