Hello all! So I will openly admit that I know nothing about software development. My only experience with coding was 15 years ago when I watched a YouTube video on how to make a looping program that I sent to my friend, and I have a basic understanding of excel. Anyways—— I applied for a job that was suppose to be for finance with excel as an auxiliary tool. I interviewed well, but there were just better candidates, so I’m not super upset about that. So then I was offered a position as a software developer despite my disclosure that I had virtually 0 knowledge of this topic. I inquired a little more about this job offer and it turned into something to the effect of:
You will be an apprentice at company X. You will spend 100 days learning how to code (remote) and then work for company Y through company X for a year at a sub 50k salary on a project (in person) When the project is complete, you will work for a year at that same salary for company Y as a full time employee (in person). This job that would be filled would be a junior full stack Java developer. After the end of that full year, you can negotiate a higher salary. I feel like this is kind of a poison pill, but as someone who would be switching careers, I don’t know if this is something that is normal. If I went this route, what is likely to happen 3-5 years after? Is this a scam of sorts?
