Is there a term for managing configuration files?

Web search hits only to ”software configuration management” which seems to be version control for sys admins.

At work I need to do configuration files by hand for test system when our customer wants to test new product. There is bunch of coordinates and parameters for different features that might or might not be used between different products. I was thinking could I do my thesis about making situtation better. Tried to find is there literature about that but couldn’t find any.
